Available in any amount, your gift card will be sent via email to the recipient. Essex, Massachusetts is one of the four communities that comprise Cape Ann, along with Gloucester, Rockport and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Easily accessible, we're only a forty-five minute drive north of Boston, MA and Portsmouth, NH, and under an hour and half drive from Worcester, MA, Cape Cod and Providence, RI. We are on the water February – October and the River is constantly changing with the seasons.

Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Excursions

Thank you all so much for giving us a relaxing, accommodating, and informative experience during our cruise yesterday. Everything was great, and we couldn't have asked for a more pleasant staff, not only during the cruise, but also throughout the planning. We are located on the beautiful Connecticut River in Essex, CT, at the foot of Main Street at Steamboat Dock. If you’re new to paddling or simply don’t wish to deal with parking hassles, book a guided trip with Essex River Basin Adventures. They’ll set you up with all the gear you’ll need and provide valuable information on the ecology and history of the Essex River. This cruise can be enjoyed to its fullest by simply just bringing yourself with a great attitude!

Train & Boat

Please arrive 30 minutes before your departure time and check in at the Essex Station Ticket Window. Advance purchase is strongly suggested; walk up ticket purchase availability is not guaranteed. Tickets are non-refundable but can be exchanged for another date/time if done so 48 hours prior to your scheduled excursion. This excursion operates Rain or Shine but the the Company reserves the rights to delay, postpone or cancel the excursion. We do not give assigned seats when you purchase tickets. There are certainly enough seats for everyone on board, but you are not required to stay in them for the whole cruise.

FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED

We'll suggest a restaurant that suits your taste. We always welcome children of all ages on our cruises. However, please keep in mind that our goal is to provide a quiet, relaxing, and informative tour for everyone.

ADULT TICKETS:

Outdoorsmen will find themselves right at home, as you meander out into parts of the estuary you may be seeing during your event with us. If you have a group of ten or more and you’d like to enjoy one of our scheduled trips, please call us to obtain a group rate. Make a reservation and take advantage of our special group rates. Dine together at one of our fine local restaurants before or after your cruise.

TIDAL BEACH CLAMBAKES

We are lucky to live on the North Shore and have this company to help us enjoy it. The Trustees of Reservations also offers guided kayak trips to the Crane Wildlife Refuge and Choate Island from late June through October. Only service animals are allowed on our public cruises.

Reserve your spot on any of our upcoming cruises!

Plus, there’s a bar & restroom onboard Our private charters are perfect for company outings, birthday parties, wedding events, reunions, clubs and organizations, or entertaining clients. Tickets for our public cruises are non-refundable and non-transferable inside of our 24-hour cancellation window. If you get lost, stuck in traffic, or otherwise can't make it for any reason, you will lose your tickets. We highly suggest saving yourself the worry, and arriving in town early. There are enough restaurants, antique shops, and other things to do that can keep you occupied in the time leading up to the cruise.

You may also decide to bring your own snacks or non-alcoholic beverages (but no coolers please). We do, however, invite you to enjoy your meal at our waiting area prior to the cruise. Essex River Cruises strictly holds to a 24-hour cancellation policy for all public cruises, unless otherwise notified. We work with local breweries and restaurants to help us create truly unique experiences, such as our National Rosé Day Cruise.

PARKING:

We do not have an area to check in any belongings, but we often find that space for personal items is not an issue on board our vessels. In over 25 years of plying the Essex River, we have never had anyone get seasick due to rough waters. The Essex River is a very sheltered area, with the well known Crane Beach acting as a great barrier from the occasional rough seas of the open ocean.

For bus groups, ask us about an itinerary including dining, shopping and sightseeing. Our narrated cruises are scenic, relaxing, and educational. Join us for a cruise along the Essex River as we glide past islands, historic mansions, wildlife, and stunning scenery.

And there’s no finer way to end your day on the water than with a carton of local fried wholebellies or bowl of steamers washed down with a local ale! In addition to daily sightseeing cruises, Essex River Cruises offers private charters for all occasions. We kindly ask that you refrain from bringing full size meals on board the vessel. We have snacks and drinks available in our ticket office, which you may purchase and bring on the boat.

Just as impressive are the historic sites, including Gillette Castle, Goodspeed Opera House and the Haddam Swing Bridge. Upon Becky‘s return to Deep River Landing, the steam train welcomes passengers for the return trip back to Essex Station. I live in the area and take this cruise every year. I learn something new every time...the scenery...the narration.

Dine in town at one of the many fine restaurants surrounding us after the cruise. Mimosas, wine, and beer for purchase (liquor sales starting at 11 am.) We will provide complimentary muffins, coffee & juice. Be forewarned that the marshes in and around Essex are prime breeding ground for the dreaded greenhead fly. These aggressive biting insects can make for a miserable paddle, particularly in July and early August, unless you wear protective clothing and powerful bug spray. The best times for paddling this area are typically late spring (May-June) and early fall (September-October).

Another launch site that puts you much closer to Crane Beach and Choate Island is Clammer’s Beach, at the end of Conomo Point. Plan to launch and haul here on the upper half of the tide; otherwise you’ll be dragging your yak over the sticky mud flats. Non-resident parking is available about 1/8-mile down Conomo Point Road. Enjoy a scenic river excursion that captures the essence of New England.

Formed 15,000 years ago by melting glaciers of the last Ice Age, the marsh serves as feeding ground for many species of beautiful birds and abundant wildlife. For generations it has sustained boat builders, fisherman, clammers, entrepreneurs and characters of all sorts from the Agawam natives to the present residents. We'll tell some of their stories during your cruise. The vessels we use for our public cruises are United States Coast Guard certified with an experienced Captain and crew. Both vessels are safe, comfortable, and easy to board, and are equipped with a PA system, iPod compatible sound system featuring Bose speakers, bar and restroom on board for your convenience. Our vessels are wheelchair accessible (non-motorized wheelchairs only) and we’ll help you aboard. Our vessels allow you to fully enjoy the unspoiled charm of the area rain or shine, all season long. The marsh itself is part of the Essex River estuary, an intriguing natural work in progress.
